“My experience has made me want my daughter to be financially independent and not depend on her father or brothers or future husband for handouts” – Mariam runs a womens’ association in a small village of Jerash in Jordan. Her story forms a part of a series of documentaries recently completed in my work with the John Paul II Foundation based in Rome, Italy. The foundation is providing business opportunities to small farmers like Mariam by encouraging them to invest in the Aloe Vera plant.
“I consider the leaves of Aloe Vera to be the leaves from heaven” says Mariam as she explains the various benefits of the plant even going to the extent of calling it a walking pharmacy on its own. “La mia esperienza mi ha fatto desiderare che mia figlia fosse finanziariamente indipendente e non dipendesse da suo padre, dai fratelli o dal futuro marito per le elemosine” – Mariam gestisce un’associazione di donne in un piccolo villaggio di Jerash in Giordania. La sua storia fa parte di una serie di documentari recentemente completati nel mio lavoro con la Fondazione Giovanni Paolo II con sede a Roma, in Italia. La fondazione offre opportunità di business ai piccoli agricoltori come Mariam incoraggiandoli a investire nella pianta di Aloe Vera.
“Considero le foglie dell’Aloe Vera come le foglie del cielo” dice Mariam mentre spiega i vari benefici della pianta arrivando addirittura a definirla una farmacia ambulante a sé stante. Si vede in questa immagine con sua figlia che estrae il gel dalle foglie che ha raccolto nel suo piccolo giardino di casa.
